Logistics And Trade Hub Reaps Economic Benefits

With its strategic location at the entrance to the Red Sea, this small country of about one million people in the Horn of Africa serves as a vital trade, logistical and military regional hub. Djibouti also plays a crucial role in China’s Silk Road project and provides Ethiopia with its only access to the sea.

Furthermore, the nation capitalizes on the presence of several free zones, an open trade regime, and a stable currency, attracting substantial levels of foreign direct investment (FDI).

Despite these strengths, economic development faces several challenges. High electricity costs, opaque business practices and corruption, and a weak financial sector stifle growth. Additionally, the country struggles with endemic poverty, high unemployment, a low-skilled workforce, and inefficient labor laws. Djibouti’s economic dependence on Ethiopia and China further complicates the scenario.
