A Diversified Economy Serving As The Region’s Commercial Hub

Situated on the equator, Kenya is a leading economy in sub-Saharan Africa. With a domestic market of more than 50 million people, the country boasts a young and educated English-speaking population, and an emerging middle class. A low-middle-income nation since 2014, Kenya has a relatively diversified, market-based economy and serves as the commercial, financial and logistics hub of East Africa, with Mombasa being the region’s leading port. Owing to these strengths, Kenya is a preferred destination on the continent for foreign direct investment (FDI), particularly in tourism, finance, renewable energy, communication technology, and manufacturing.

Still, agriculture remains a primary backbone of Kenya’s economy, contributing a third of the annual GDP, with the majority of Kenyans living in rural areas, many in poverty. On its path toward full economic development and diversification, Kenya faces additional challenges, including poor governance, corruption, and inadequate infrastructure. Furthermore, it struggles with low public resources and high public debt. The country also grapples with political, social and ethnic unrest and divisions, as well as with Islamist terrorist threats in the north.
