Blockchain development is now the most sought-after job skill, second only to robotics, says the newest quarterly index published by freelance-job website Upwork. Blockchain workers charge as much as $150 per hour.
Third on the list of the fastest-growing job skills is another blockchain-related expertise: bitcoin development. Blockchain and bitcoin, says Upwork, grew more than 200% from a year earlier. The website notes that “while enterprises are still deciding how to navigate this technology, they believe it will lead to a reformation of whole industries long-term.”
Job-data analytics firm Burning Glass Technologies also found a 115% increase from last year in postings for blockchain developers. “Because of its connection with ‘cryptocurrencies,’ blockchain is associated with finance; and major banks like Liberty Mutual, Capital One, and Bank of America have posted openings,” writes Scott Bittle of Burning Glass. “But the demand for blockchain is much broader,” he notes, “including major consulting firms like Accenture and Deloitte and technology companies like IBM and SAP. This is additional evidence that the business world is starting to take blockchain seriously.
