Global Finance evaluates the Best of the Best Supply Chain Finance Providers in The Winners’ Circle: an ongoing look at the top awards winners over the magazine’s 25-year history, launched as part of our 25th anniversary in 2012.
Global Finance ‘s annual rankings of the World’s Best Supply Chain Finance Providers may have started only in 2009, but this ranking, which includes seven global and eight regional categories, has already captured some important trends in what has been a transformative period for the supply chain finance market. Since the 2008 global financial crisis, when large companies in every sector and geographical region began to realize that higher funding costs were hitting liquidity at their suppliers and largest customers, transaction services banks have been making aggressive moves to capture more market share. Interestingly, although Citi is our top supply chain finance provider globally and has also been our top provider in North America for the past three years, it has not achieved leading positions in such big growth markets as Asia, where Standard Chartered heads our regional ranking, or even Latin America, where Santander takes the top spot.
Meanwhile, multibank platforms have become much more popular, and a broad array of alternative providers are making big inroads into this market. Orbian has come in first as the best global nonbank supply chain finance provider for three years straight, while PrimeRevenue takes the award for best global supplier support and enrollment.
Given that global transaction services banks are under pressure from regulators and ratings agencies to shore up their balance sheets, which can only result in tighter credit conditions for supply chain finance clients, nonbank providers are likely to become even more prominent in years to come.
