Economy Powered By Ecotourism And FDI

Spanning just 750 square kilometers, this Caribbean island nation boasts a year-round tropical climate, wildlife-rich rainforests and numerous rivers and waterfalls, making it an attractive ecotourism destination. In recent years, the country has also emerged as a major international financial center, particularly in offshore banking and corporate activities, and has encouraged foreign direct investment (FDI) aimed at expanding its revenue sources with projects in information and communication technologies, alternative energy, agribusiness and real estate. Furthermore, Dominica promotes citizenship by investment projects and operates with a stable Eastern Caribbean dollar pegged to theU.S. dollar.

Yet, despite some progress, the economy still relies primarily on tourism and agriculture. High unemployment and poverty rates, elevated energy costs, and vulnerability to natural hazards, as well as global economic shocks and commodity price fluctuations, are additional weaknesses.
