Economic Potential Ruined By Corruption And Violence
Sharing the island of Hispaniola with the Dominican Republic, Haiti is one of the most urbanized nations in Latin America and the Caribbean region. The Haitian economy has traditionally relied on the agriculture, commercial and construction sectors, as well as a vibrant apparel assembly industry. Today, however, the tale of this country of approximately 12 million people is one of growing political instability, corruption and gang violence.
As a consequence, while Haiti offers great potential in tourism, renewable energy and nearshore outsourcing activities enhanced by the presence of a young population and the strategic proximity to the United States, the challenges for local and foreign investors remain considerable. These include high inflation, poor infrastructure, opaque bureaucracy, widespread inequalities and the migration of skilled workers. Additionally, Haiti faces exposure to natural hazards.
